Plunger Cans – ToolsRUs
Metal or plastic plunger cans are used to safely store and dispense flammable liquids like lubricants and solvents. This shop tool provides a quick and easy method for moistening a shop rag or towel when you need to apply a liquid of some kind. These tough cans are durably built and have a number of safety features, plus they usually warranteed, so you can depend on them for years.
The most common sizes are 1 litre, 1.9 litres and 3.8 litres. Bigger automotive and machine shops may use several plunger cans of varying size, while a single 1-litre can might serve a small commercial or home shop just fine. Plunger cans come in rugged, 24-gauge steel and high-density polyethylene varieties. The materials are designed to withstand constant wear and tear. In addition to a durable build, polyethylene cans are made to resist corrosion. The powder-coat finish of steel plunger cans helps them resist rusting and the effects of chemical exposure.
Self-closing, leak-proof valves ensure that the solvent or lubricant is safely contained. The basic design of a plunger can consists of the reservoir, a brass, manual pump assembly and an upper pan or dasher. To use the can, simply place a shop rag or sponge atop the dasher and press down on the assembly. The pumping motion releases a small amount of liquid from the reservoir into the upper pan where the rag soaks it up. Excess solvent or lubricant drains right back into the storage reservoir. To prevent spilling, the rim of the upper pan is molded to create a saucer shape.
Steel cans and corrosion-resistant polyethylene cans are suitable for even the most aggressive solvents. A brass flame arrestor is another component that helps to prevent accidents. This prevents the accidental igniting of the very flammable liquid contained within.
